Aylostera fiebrigii (Gurke) Backeb.


A species which has been in cultivation for many years, having been first described in 1905. The plant grows over a wide area of Bolivia and Argentina and is very variable. There are many plants, given different specific status by Mosti & Papini, and on this website, which are sometimes lumped in with Aylostera fiebrigii and the name “The fiebrigii group” is in common usage. These include A. albipilosa, A. cajasensis, A. cintiensis, A. donaldiana, A. hoffmannii, A. ithyacantha, A. jujuyana, A. kieslingii, A. pulchella, A. robustispina, A. spinosissima, A. tamboensis, A. vallegrandensis. There are also many other names which are no longer accepted.

The plant has large (for Aylostera), spherical stems forming clumps, densely covered with long spines, which can be white or brown or a combination. Flowers are generally orange or orange-red.
