Sometimes confused with A. sumayana or A. albopectinata, and there are many plants being sold in nurseries called A. supthutiana which are really those species. This is a very dark-bodied plant, dark green with brownish tones, sometimes almost black, with darkish red flowers. The outer petals can be brown and pink, sometimes white, stamens red, and the stigmas are green. At first glance some individual plants may look like they belong in the Mediolobivia subgenus, but these are genetically more closely related to e.g. Aylostera heliosa than to any Mediolobivia.
