Regarded by some as a form of Aylostera spegazziniana. A relatively recent discovery, having been first described in 1986. Sometimes this species is confused with Aylostera supthutiana, both having similar body shape, spination and red flowers, but A. sumayana has yellowish or white stamens and mid-green coloured bodies, while A. supthutiana has red or dark pink stamens and dark green or brown bodies.
Spine length is variable, with some plants having very short spines, others longer, fine and bristly.
