Regarded by many as a form of Aylostera steinmannii. Found to be distinct enough to be given specific status by Mosti & Papini (2011).

The red flowers tend to be smaller than typical A. steinmannii and the bodies have a distinctive greyish cast on which the curly, white spines stand out well.
