Aylostera tafnaensis description


Aylostera tafnaensis was first described as a variety of Lobivia (Aylostera) pygmaea by Walter Rausch in Lobivia 85, pp. 116 & 144 in 1987.

Lobivia pygmaea (Fries) Backeberg var. tafnaensis Rausch var. nov.

Simplex ad paulum proliferans, globosa ad brevicylindrica, radice rapiformi carnosa, 15 mm diametiens, dilute‑glauca et paulum violaceo‑colorata; costis 10, recte adscendentibus vel subtortis, crenis transversis in gibberes 1.5 mm longos divisis; areolis ovalibus, 1 mm longis, clare‑fuscotomentosis; aculeis marginalibus 10–12, radiantibus, circa corpus contextis, ad 5 mm longis, setosis flavido‑albis, basi incrassata fuscis; aculeo centrali 0. Floribus 30 mm longis et diametientibus; ovario et receptaculo clare‑fusco, squamis fuscis, pilis et setis albis tecto; phyllis perigonii exterioribus roseis, medio‑viridi‑fusco‑striatis; phyllis perigonii interioribus rubro‑aurantiacis; fauce, stylo,stigmatibus (6–7) viridibus, stylo cum receptaculo paululum connato. Fructu et seminibus typi modo.

English translation

Lobivia pygmaea (Fries) Backeberg var. tafnaensis Rausch var. nov.

Single to branching a little, spherical to short cylindrical, 15mm in diameter, slightly glaucous and a little suffused with violet; fleshy tap root; 10 ribs, straight to slightly spiralling, crossed by grooves between 1.5mm long tubercles; areoles oval, 1mm long, with light brown wool; 10 – 12 marginal spines, spreading, close to the body, up to 5mm long, bristly yellow-white with a thickened brown base; no central spines. Flowers 30mm long and the same wide; ovary and receptacle light brown, with brown scales, covered in white wool and bristles; outer petals pink with a greenish-brown central stripe; inner petals reddish-orange; throat, style and stigmas (6 – 7) green, the style a little fused with the receptacle. Fruit and seed as for the type [A. pygmaea].

Habitat: above Tafna, Jujuy, Argentina, at 4,000m altitude.

Type: Rausch 508a.

Ähnlich der Var. knizei Rausch, jedoch mit etwas irisierender Blüte, außen rosa, innere Blütenblätter rot‑orange und innen grünlich‑weiß. Typ1okalität in hohen Lagen bei Tafna, Jujuy.

Similar to the Var. knizei Rausch, but with a somewhat iridescent flower, pink on the outside, red-orange inner petals and greenish-white on the inside. Type locality in high altitudes in Tafna, Jujuy.
