Regarded by some as yet another form of A. pygmaea. There has been much confusion with this species and the other species often lumped into A. pygmaea. Mosti & Papini (2011) recognise A. haagei as a distinct species with three subspecies: A. haagei ssp. haagei, A. haagei ssp. elegantula and A. haagei ssp. mudanensis. These subspecies are also sometimes regarded by some as separate species.
A. haagei has a range of flower colour from pink through salmon to peach and reddish. A. haagei ssp. elegantula is smaller bodied than the type, prolifically branching, with smaller flowers; A. haagei ssp. mudanensis has thicker more spherical bodies, white spines and large peach / orangeish flowers.
Although each of the three subspecies was described at different times in different journals, the descriptions are provided together here.
