Aylostera haagei description

The original description of Rebutia (Aylostera) haagei was published in Kaktusář, 1: 88, in 1930 by Alberto Vojtěch Frič & Ernst Schelle. The original description of Lobivia (Aylostera) haagei var. (ssp.) elegantula was published in Lobivia 85 in 1987 by Walter Rausch, and the original description of Rebutia (Aylostera) mudanensis (haagei ssp. mudanensis) was published in Kakteen und andere Sukkulenten, 27: 169, in 1976 by Walter Rausch.

I have not been able to obtain a copy of the original Rebutia haagei description, however a summary of this, as Lobivia haagei, was reprinted in Lobivia 85 (1987) by Walter Rausch (in German), and the main points are given here, translated into English. For all the descriptions given, you should look up the originals for more details, drawings, photographs and notes. Note that Lobivia haagei described here includes a number of different forms which have since been given separate specific status.

Lobivia haagei (Frič & Schelle) Wessn.

Solitary, later somewhat branching, 2–3 cm high and 1–2 cm thick, dull grey, with a large tap root, ribs approx. 12, straight or lightly twisted, divided into small tubercles, radial spines in 5 pairs and one downwards, thin, close fitting, colourless, no central spines. flower 4 cm long and wide, with salmon-pink-orange and purple stripes. Fruit spherical, hairy, soft, shiny black, later drying up; cap-shaped, rough-matt with a broad, straight single navel.

Habitat Jujuy, Argentina.

Notes given in Lobivia 85 following the description

Rausch acknowledges that the only concrete features separating the wide range of A. haagei (as defined at the time) from the wide range of A. pygmaea are (a) the pastel-coloured flowers of A. haagei versus the more saturated colours (and spines) of A. pygmaea, and (b) the glaucous grey-green appearance with purplish overtones of A. haagei bodies. However population ranges are distinct, and within themselves uniform. With the “lumped” species removed to their own taxa (A. canacruzensis, A. crassa, A. eos, A. nazarenoensis, A. orurensis, A. pelzliana, A. violascens) it becomes easier to define.
