Aylostera parvula description


Lobivia (Aylostera) steinmannii var. parvula (parvula) was first described by Walter Rausch in Lobivia 85, pp. 125 & 146, in 1987.

Lobivia steinmannii (Solms‑Laub.) Backbg. var. parvula Rausch var. nov.

Simplex vel paulum proliferans, globosa ad brevicylindrica, 10–15 mm diametiens, flavo‑viridis, radice rapiformi; costis 10–11, rectis, crenis transversalibus parvis in gibberulos 2 mm longos divisis; areolis ovalibus, 1 mm longis, albo‑tomentosis; aculeis marginalibus 5 paribus et 1 deorsum directo, rectis, divaricatis, ad 5 mm longis, vitreoflavido‑albis, basi fusca incrassatis; aculeo centrali 0. Floribus 30 mm longis et diametientibus; ovario et receptaculo fusco‑roseo, squamis brunneis, pilis et setis albis tecto; phyllis perigonii exterioribus violaceo‑roseis, medio‑viridulo‑fuscostriatis; phyllis perigonii interioribus aurantiacis; fauce rosea, intus alba, filamentis roseis, stylo et stigmatibus (6–8) viridibus. Fructu globoso, 5 mm diametiente, brunneo‑violaceo, squamis subnigris, lana densa flavido‑alba, setis paucis tecto. Seminibus Lobiviae steinmannii (Solms-Laub.) Backbg. modo.

Patria: Bolivia, Potosi, Cucho Ingenio in 3.800 m alt.

English translation

Lobivia steinmannii (Solms‑Laub.) Backbg. var. parvula Rausch var. nov.

Single to branching a little, spherical to short cylindrical, 10 – 15m in diameter, yellowish green, tap-rooted; 10 – 11 ribs, straight, divided by lateral grooves into tubercles 2mm long; areoles oval, 1mm long, with white wool; 5 pairs of marginal spines and 1 pointing downwards, straight, spreading, up to 5mm long, glassy yellowish-white with a darker, thickened base; no central spines. Flowers 30mm long and the same diameter; ovary and receptacle dark pink, with brown scales, hairs and bristles; outer petals violet-pink with a central brownish-green stripe; inner petals orange; throat pink, white on the inside, anthers pink, style and stigmas (6 – 8) green. Fruit spherical, 5mm in diameter, purplish brown with blackish scales, dense yellowish-white wool and a few bristles. Seed as for Lobivia steinmannii (Solms-Laub.) Backbg.

Habitat: Bolivia, Potosi, Cucho Ingenio at 3,800m altitude.

Type: Rausch 296.
