Aylostera odehnalii description

DESCRIPTIO: affinis R. eos, sed plantis minoribus, grandi- et roseifloris.

Plantae singulares, radice napiforme, caule globulare, apice applanato, 10-20mm diametro, partim subterraneo, tuberculis ca 2mm longis, angulosis, viridi­violaceis vel brunneis. Areolae Iana rufa postea grisescente, 8-10 spinis radiatis, acicularis, pectinatis ad 5mm longis, albidis, irregulariter inflexis. Flores 50-60mm diametro, 40mm longi, segmenti perianthii interioribus circiter 15, 8-12mm latis, 30- 40mm longis, roseis, linea mediana atra, mucronatis et extrema margine serratulo, segmentibus exterioribus perrianthii squamiformibus, purpuraceis, margine pallido, 5-15mm longis, ca 5mm latis. Pericarpium ca 5mm longum, supra plus minusque brunescens, basi albidum, ovarii loculus ad 4mm diametiens. Stzlus ad 12mm longus, 6 lobis albis vel roseis, 2. 5mm longis. Fructus ad 8mm diametro, villosus, basi pallidus, refrigens longitudianaliter 1-2 rimis. Semen ad 1 mm diametro, testa brunescens, tuberculata, hilo immerso.

PATRIA ET DISTRIBUTIO: Bolivia australis: haud procul ab urbe Potosi in collibus petrosis ad 3.950m supra mare.

R. odehnalii with tiny stem suffused violet or brownish with ribs divided into tubercles, areoles without central spine, broad sugar rose widely open flowers up to 60mm across with obtuse perianth lobes and green fruit is very different from R. eos with much bigger stem and tiny pink flowers. (R. eos is distributed from Jujuy province in Argentina, where is located near Tafna). Only one known locality of R. odehnalii is located near Potosi, ca 7km NE towards Sucre, is still in good condition. Very ornamental taxon, named after the discoverer, our friend ing. Josef Odehnal.

English translation of the Latin

Single bodied, tap-rooted, spherical, flattened apex, 10 – 20mm in diameter, partly underground, tubercles ca. 2 mm long, angular, purplish green to brown. Areoles with red wool later greyish, 8 – 10 radial spines, needle-like, pectinate, up to 5mm long, white, irregularly twisted. Flowers 50 – 60 mm in diameter, 40mm long, 15 round, inner petals 8 – 12mm wide, 30 – 40mm long, pink with a darker central stripe, with a small tip and a serrated edge, outer petals scale-shaped, purplish with a paler edge, 5 – 15mm long, ca. 5mm wide. Pericarp 5mm long, more or less brownish with a white base, ovary chamber up to 4mm diameter. Style up to 12mm long, with 6 white to pink stigmatic lobes, 2.5mm long. Fruit up to 8mm in diameter, hairy, with a pale base, splitting longways in 1 – 2 cracks. Seed up to 1mm in diameter, brown skinned, warty, with attachment buried.

Habitat and distribution: southern Bolivia, not far from the city of Potosi in rocky hills up to 3,950m above sea level.
