Weingartia (Sulcorebutia) tarijensis was first described (as Weingartia tarijensis) by F. H. Brandt in Kakteen Orchid. Rundschau 3: 93 in 1978. In the same year, Friedrich Ritter described Sulcorebutia tarijensis in Ashingtonia, 3: 13. Ritter’s description was marginally earlier however Brandt’s has become the accepted name.
Note that there is also the plant described as Rebutia tarijensis by Walter Rausch in 1975! Which is an Aylostera and has resulted in some confusion. The unimaginative practice of naming plants after their location by placing “ensis” at the end is not ideal.
Hentzschel and Augustin list two subspecies other than the nominate: W. t. subsp. carichimayuensis and W. t. subsp. samaensis.
Description to follow.
