Weingartia (Sulcorebutia) frankiana was first described by Walter Rausch in Kakteen und andere Sukkulenten, 21: 102, in 1970.
Over time it has variously been included as a synonym of Sulcorebutia canigueralii or Sulcorebutia pulchra but is now accepted as a good species. Plants exist which come from the geographical area between W. pulchra and W. frankiana which are thought to be natural hybrids or intergrades.
Plants of this species in the collection include:
Weingartia frankiana BLMT301
Weingartia frankiana LH798
Weingartia frankiana HS75
Weingartia frankiana MN621
Weingartia frankiana VS419
