Weingartia fidaiana was first described by E. Werdermann in Kakteenkunde, p.21, in 1937.
Note that this plant’s specific name is spelled fidaiana, but it is also known by the name W. fidana. W. fidaiana is the original and valid name. W. fidana has arisen through an error but has unfortunately been adopted by many and even included on some databases as valid.
Two subspecies are recognised here: W. f. fidaiana and W. f. amerhauseri. Kew also lists the subspecies W. f. cintiensis but Hentzschel & Augustin recognise W. cintiensis as a species in its own right.
W. neumanniana is now regarded as a synonym of this species.
