Aylostera mandingaensis description


Aylostera mandingaensis was first described by R. Wahl and H. Jucker in Kakteen und andere Sukkulenten 24(7): p.p. 99 – 105, the journal of the Deutsche Kakteen-Gesellschaft, in 2008.

The description is reproduced here in the original Latin as published, together with my own translation in English. You should look up the original for extensive further notes in German plus several colour photographs.

Aylostera mandingaensis R. Wahl & H. Jucker, nov. sp.

Lat. diag. (dicta de Rebutia tarvitaensis F. Ritter, quae crescit in eodem loco, in parenthèse): corpore applante globoso, ad 40 mm lato et 20 mm alto (1,5-3,0 cm crassum, in aetate elongatum ad 4,5 cm), nitido atroviridi (non nitens, viride ad atroviride), radicibus tenuibus numerosis (radix ± breve rapiformis postea ab ea fasciculi radicum tenuium ramificantes); areolis ovalibus, 2,5 mm longis et I,5mm latis (1,5 mm longae et 0,5 mm latae), spinis 15-17 (5-9), nonnullis earum porrectis vel plus minusve oblique directis (non porrectae), 1-4 earum spinis centralibus (sine spinis centralibus), prope apicem brunneis postremo griseis (subalbae, sufflavae ad claro subbrunneae); floribus 20-22 mm longis et latis (5,0-6,5 cm lati).

English translation

Aylostera mandingaensis R. Wahl & H. Jucker, nov. sp.

Latin diagnosis (Description of Rebutia tarvitaensis F. Ritter, which grows in the same place, given in brackets for comparison):  a spherical body up to 40 mm wide and 20 mm high (1.5–3.0 cm thick with age; elongated to 4.5 cm); glossy, dark green (not glossy, green to dark green), with numerous thin roots (root ± short rapiform [tap-rooted], later on forming a bundle of thin branched roots); oval areoles, 2.5 mm long and 1,5mm wide (1.5 mm long and 0.5 mm wide), spines 15-17 (5-9), some more or less angled outwards (spines not projecting), central spines 1-4 (no central spines), brownish near the apex and finally brownish grey (whitish, yellowish or bright brownish); flowers 20–22 mm long and wide (5.0–6.5 cm in diameter).
