Aylostera kieslingii description


Rebutia (Aylostera) kieslingii was first described by W. Rausch in Kakteen und andere Sukkulenten 28(8): p. 177, the journal of the Deutsche Kakteen-Gesellschaft, in 1977.

The description is reproduced here in the original Latin as published, together with my own translation in English. You should look up the original for extensive further notes in German plus a colour photograph.

Simplex, globosa, ad 40 mm diametiens, clare-viridis; costis ca. 17, spiraliter tortis, in gibberes 3 mm longos, verrucosus divisis; areolis ovalibus, ad 3 mm longis, albo-tomentosis; aculeis marginalibus ca. 25, radiante-patentibus, setosis, vitreo-albis, 5—7 mm longis; aculeis centralibus 3—5, validioribus, pungentibus, 7 mm longis, aureis.

Floribus 40 mm longis et 25 mm diametientibus; ovario et receptaculo roseo, squamis paucis, clare fuscis, lanceolatis et paucis pilis et setis albis tecto; phyllis perigonia exterioribus anguste rotundis, aurantiacis medio-roseo-striatis; phyllis perigonii interioribus biserialibus (qua re flore flori pleno simili), spathulate-rotundis, aurantiacis; fauce albida, 25 mm longa, 20 mm eius manubrii modo cum stylo connata, stylo albo, stigmatibus 5, flavidis.

Fructu bulboso, 6 mm diametiente, violaceo-rubro ad nigro, pilis et setis albis tecto, sarcocarpio roseo. Seminibus Aylosterae typo.

Patria: Argentina, Salta, apud Caspala, 3 200 m alt.

Typus: Rausch 694, depositus in Herbario Collectionis Plantarum Succulentarum Municipali Turicensi, Helvetia.

English translation Rebutia (Aylostera) kieslingii

Single bodied, spherical, up to 40mm in diameter, bright green; ca. 17 ribs, twisting spirally, divided into warty tubercles 3mm long; areoles oval, up to 3mm long, with white wool; ca. 25 marginal spines, bristly, spreading outwards from body, glassy white, 5 – 7mm long; 3 – 5 stronger, stiff, central spines, gold.

Flowers 40mm long and 25mm in diameter; ovary and tube pink, with a few bright pink lanceolate scales, and a few white hairs and bristles; outer petals short and rounded, orange with a central pink stripe; inner petals in two series (like a double flower), spathulate-rounded, orange*; throat whitish, 25mm long, 20mm fused with the white style; 5 yellowish stigmas.

Fruit bulb-like, 6mm in diameter, purple-red to black, with white hairs and bristles, flesh pink. Seed typical of Aylostera.

Habitat: in Caspala, Salta, Argentina, at an altitude of 3200m.

Collection number (Type): Rausch 694, deposited in the Herbarium of the Municipal Succulent Plant Collections of Zurich, Switzerland.

*Note that in the German notes following the description Rausch also mentions finding a red-flowered form of this plant.
