Aylostera crassa description


The original description of Lobivia (Aylostera) haagei var. crassa (crassa) was published in Lobivia 85 (1987), p. 140, by Walter Rausch.

Lobivia haagei (Frič et Schelle) Wessner var. crassa Rausch var. nov.

Simplex vel paulum proliferans, globosa ad brevicylindrica, ad 30 mm diametiens, glauco‑viridis, radice rapiformi; costis 11–12 directis, crenis transversalibus in gibberes 3–4 mm longos latosque rotundos divisis; areolis ovalibus, 2–3 mm longis, albo‑tomentosis; aculeis marginalibus 11–13, 5–6 paribus, 5–6 mm longis et 1 minore deorsum directo, accumbentibus, vitreo‑albis, basi brunea ad nigra incrassatis; aculeo centrali 0.

Floribus 40 mm longis et diametientibus, ovario et receptaculo fusco‑roseo, squamis brunneis, pilis albis, paucis setis fuscis tecto; phyllis perigonia exterioribus spathulatis, tenui‑acuminatis, violaceo‑roseis, medio‑fusco‑striatis; phyllis perigonia interioribus spathulatis, tenui‑acuminatis, aurantiacis; fauce albida, 17 mm longa, 2–3 mm eius connata, filamentis in 2 seriebus, interiore 7 mm supra ovarium incipiente, exteriore e parvo hymene oriente, roseis; stylo 2 cm longo, viridi, stigmatibus (5) 5 mm longis, flavidis.

Patria: Bolivia, Tarija, in regionibus altis apud Sama.

English translation

Lobivia haagei (Frič et Schelle) Wessner var. crassa Rausch var. nov.

Single or branching, spherical to short-cylindrical, up to 30 mm across, grey-green, with a tap root; with 11 – 12 perpendicular ribs, divided by 3-4 mm long tubercles; areoles oval, 2-3 mm long, white-felted; radial spines 11-13, 5-6 being equal, 5-6 mm long and 1 smaller pointing downwards, glassy-white, with a brown to black thickened base; no central spines.

Flowers 40 mm long and broad; ovary and receptacle dark pink-edged, with brown scales, with white hairs, the roof of a few of the brush, dark brown; outer petals spatulate, with narrow points, violet-cerise-with a dark central stripe; inner petals spatulate with narrow points, orange; throat whitish, 17 mm long, of which 2-3 mm fused with the style, filaments in 2 series, the inner beginning 7 mm above the ovary, the outer arising from a small membrane, pink; style 2 cm long, green, stigmata (5) 5 mm long, yellow.

Fruit and seed like Lobivia haagei (Frič et Schelle) Wessn.

Habitat: Bolivia, Tanja in the region above and close to Sama.
