Aylostera buiningiana description


Rebutia (Aylostera) buiningiana was first described by Walter Rausch in Kakteen und andere Sukkulenten 23(9): pp. 98 – 99, the journal of the Deutsche Kakteen-Gesellschaft, in 1972.

The description is reproduced here in the original Latin, and a note in German, together with my own translations in English. You should look up the original for more details, including a colour photograph.

Simplex, raro proliferans, globosa, ad 5 cm diametiens, griseo-laete-viridis; costis ad 20, spiralibus, in papillas 4 mm longas ac latas dissolutis; areolis rotundis ad ovalibus, ca. 2 mm diametientibus, albo- ad fusco-tomentosis; aculeis marginalibus 14—16, divaricatis, 6—10 mm longis, tenuibus, fragilibus, vitreo-albis; aculeis centralibus 2-3, seriatis, validioribus, ad 14 mm longis, albis, fusco-acuminatis et basi incrassata fuscis. Floribus lateralibus, 35 mm longis et 30 mm diametientibus; ovario et receptaculo aurantiaco-roseo, squamis fuscis, pilis et setis albis tecto; phyllis perigonii exterioribus clare-roseis, subfusco-acuminatis, spathulatis; phyllis perigonii interioribus spathulatis, aurantiaco-roseis, flore plus minusve flori pleno simili; fauce albido-rosea, filamentis albidis, stylo ca. 10 mm cum receptaculo connato, flavido, stigmatibus 6, flavis.

Fructu globoso, ca. 5 mm diametiente, rubiginoso, squamis atro-fuscis, pilis et setis albis tecto. Seminibus Aylosterae typo.

Patria: Argentina. Jujuy, apud Iruya, 2700 m alt.

English Translation

Single-bodied, rarely branching, spherical, up to 5cm in diameter, bright greyish-green; up to 20 ribs, spiralling, broken into tubercles 4mm long; areoles round to oval, around 2mm in diameter, with white to grey wool; 14 – 16 radial spines, straight, 6 to 10 mm long, thin, fragile, glassy-white; 2 – 3 central spines, arranged above each other, stronger, up to 14mm long, white with darker tips and thickening at the base. Flowers growing from the sides, 35mm long and 30mm in diameter; ovary and receptacle orange-pink, with greyish scales, and covered with white hairs and bristles; outer petals clear pink with darker tips, spatulate; inner petals spatulate, orange-pink, petals more or less filling the flower; throat whitish-pink, filaments white, style fused to tube by about 10mm, yellow, with 6 yellow stigmas.

Fruit spherical, around 5mm in diameter, reddish-brown, with dark grey scales, white hairs and bristles. Seed typical of Aylosterae.

Habitat: in Uruya, Jujuy, Argentina, at an altitude of 2700m.

Additional German Notes

Als ich diese Art sammelte, war ich der Meinung, ich hätte eine Form von Rebutia marsoneri gefunden, um so mehr war ich überrascht als die Blüten erschienen. Die Blüte ist eine pastellfarbige, orange Aylosterablüte. Ich benenne diesen Formenkreis nach dem holländischen Kakteenkenner Albert Buining.

English translation

When I collected this species I thought I had found a form of Rebutia marsoneri, so I was even more surprised when the flowers appeared. The flower is a pastel orange Aylostera flower. I name this circle of forms after the Dutch cacti expert Albert Buining.
