Aylostera brachyantha description


Lobivia (Aylostera) brachyantha was described in Kakteen und andere Sukkulenten, the journal of The Deutsche Kakteen-Gesellschaft, No. 207, p.130, by Willy Wessner in 1937.

The description is of a grafted plant in cultivation. The original collection location was unknown, and Wessner states that it was probably collected by Fr. Ritter in Bolivia in 1931. Lobivia brachiantha sp. n. Wessner.

Plania cylindrica, opace, viridis, basi lutescens, Dertice paulum impresso, aculeis superato. Costae 11, dextrorsum tortae, in mammillas obscurius virides dissolutae. Areolae 7 mm distantes, 2,5 mm longae, angustae, griseo-tomentosae, superiore margine (postea florifer) nitide brunneo-, postea albo-lanatae. Aculei radiales, 9, laete fusei, paene rosei, deinde albi, basi incrassati brunneique, ad 7 mm longi, dioaricati, superiores longissimi, verticem versi, obscuriores, 1 derectus. Flores 30 mrn lati, infundibuliformes, tubo 8 mm longo, infra 4 mm diameter, paucis squamis, pilis setisque axillaribus praediti, autosteriles. Sepala extra aeneo-lutea, recurvata. Petala exteriora in medio late violaceo-striata, intus nitide aeneo-lutea, acumine violacea, 15 : 7 mm magna, interiora 13 :7 mm magna, spathulata, supra rotundata, aeneo-lutea, obscuriore medio. Filamenta in 2-3 series ordinata, alba; antherae flavae. Stylus 16 mm longus, viridis, solitarius; stigmata flava. Ovarium nitide olivaceum, 5 mm squamis carnosis, subcuroatis, acutis, olivaceis, supra fuscis, exigue pilis brunneis setisque brevibus curvatis axillaribus praeditus. Fructus depressus, 7-8 mm , carnosus, laete viridis, meridionaliter dehiscens. Semina opaca, griseo-brunnea.

English translation

Lobivia brachiantha sp. n. Wessner.

Body cylindrical, prolifically branching, matt dark green with a bronze tinge, especially at the base; apex slightly sunk in, surmounted by spines; ribs 11, turned to the right, running downwards, completely merging into round, dark green tubercles; areoles 7 mm apart, 2,5 mm long, narrow, with short grey felt, at the upper end with a particularly shiny brown, later white felt tuft from which the flower arises. Marginal spines only, 9, in the new shoot shiny red-brown, almost pink, then yellowish white, brown and thickened at the base, up to 7 mm long, 4 pairs spreading sideways, not comb-shaped, the top pair of this longest, directed upwards and darker than the others, also one pointing downwards.

Flowers 30mm wide, funnel shaped, tube 8mm long, less than 4mm in diameter, with a few scales; hair and bristles in the scale axils and on the ovary, self-sterile. Sepals bronze-yellow coloured on top, reflexed. Outer petals widely striped purple underneath, shiny bronze-yellow on the upperside with a purple tip, 15mm long and 7mm wide; inner petals 13mm long and 7mm wide, spatulate, rounded in front, bronze-yellow with a darker centre. Filaments in 2 or 3 rows, white, with yellow anthers; style 16mm long, green, free standing; yellow stigmas. Ovary shiny olive-green, 5mm diameter, with fleshy scales, curved, pointed and protruding, olive-green going to brown at the top; scale axes with short brown hair and a few short curved bristles. Fruit flattened, 7 to 8mm, fleshy, shiny dark green, tearing downwards when ripe. Seeds dull grey-brown.
