Aylostera albiareolata description


The original description of Rebutia (Aylostera) albiareolata was published in Kakteen und andere Sukkulenten 28(4): 76, 1977, the journal of the Deutsche Kakteen-Gesellschaft, by Friedrich Ritter.

Rebutia albiareolata Ritter spec. nov.

Solitaria, globosa, clare viridis, 3—5 cm crassa, radice rapacea; costae dissolutae tuberculis 2-2,5 mm altis; areolae oblongae, 1-2 mm diam., 3—4 mm inter se remotae, lana alba copiosa obtectae; spinae asperae, marginales 10-14, albae, 6-10 mm longae, centrales complures, robustiores, ferrugineae, 8—15 mm longae.

Flores 3—4 cm longi ; ovarium lana alba et saetis albis instructum;  stylus ca. 6 mm cum tubo coalitus; sulcus nectarifer 3 mm longus; tubus floralis 3-5 mm longus, glaber; filamenta alba, biseriata; stylus et 4 stigmata flaveola; petala 17-20 mm longa, 4-6 mm lata, fere linearia, interne coccinea, externe carminea; semina 1,2 mm longa, tenuiter tuberculata; habitat Padcaya, Prov. Arce, Bolivia.

English translation:

Rebutia albiareolata Ritter Spec. nov.

Solitary, spherical, bright green, 3-5 cm thick, tap root; the ribs broken by tubercles 2-2,5 mm high; areoles oblong, 1-2 mm in diam., 3-4 mm apart, covered in white wool; spines coarse, 10 – 14 marginals white, 6-10 mm long, many strong reddish-brown centrals, 8-15 mm long.

Flowers 3-4 cm long; ovary with white wool, arranged with white bristles; style ca. 6 mm in the tube; nectary groove 3 mm long; the floral tube 3-5 mm long, slender, glabrous; anthers white, in 2 rows, style and 4 stigmata yellowish; petals, 17-20 mm long, 4-6 mm wide, almost linear, internally scarlet, externally carmine; seeds 1.2 mm long with thin bumps; habitat Padcaya, Prov. Arce, Bolivia.
