Aylostera marieae description


The original description of Rebutia (Mediolobivia) marieae was published in Acta Mus. Richnov., Sect. Natur. 9(1) p.71, by L. Fischer and J. J. Halda in 2002. The original publication has Latin, Czech and English text.

Rebutia (Mediolobivia) marieae L. Fischer et J. J. Halda spec. nov.

DESCRIPTIO: affinis R. atrovirens, sed plantis majoribus, grandi-et violacifloris. Plantae singulares, radice napiforme, caule globulare, apice applanato, 30- 40mm diametro, partim subterraneo, tuberculis ca 2mm longis, angulosis et infra carinatis, viridi-griseis ad glaucis. Areolae lana rufa postea grisescente, 6-10-spinis acicularis ad 5mm longis, complanatis, albidis, irregulariter inflexis. Flores 50- 60mm diametro, 40-45mm longi, segmenti perianthii interioribus circiter 16, 7-10mm latis, 20-30mm longis, violaceis, linea mediana permagentea, mucronatis et extrema margine serratulo, segmentibus exterioribus perrianthii squamiformibus, subrubris, margine pallido, 7-18 mm longis, ca 3mm latis. Pericarpium ca 5mm longum, supra plus minusque purpuraceum, basi albidum, ovarii loculus ad 3mm diametiens. Stylus ad 10mm longus, 6 lobis albis, 3mm longis. Fructus ad 10 mm diametro, villosus, basi pallidus, refrigens longitudinaliter 1-2 rimis. Semen 0.8 mm diametro, testa brunnea, tuberculata, hilo immerso.

PATRIA ET DISTRIBUTIO: Argentina borealis, provincia Jujuy: Abrapampa prope Agi; solo schistoso, ca 3200m supra mare.

English translation

Rebutia (Mediolobivia) marieae L. Fischer et J. J. Halda spec. nov.

Similarities with R. atrovirens, but larger and with purplish / violet* flowers. Single body, tap-rooted, flattened apex, 30 – 40 mm in diameter, partly below soil, tubercles 2mm long, angular shaped, the underside keel-shaped, greyish green and glaucous. Areoles with brown wool, later greyish, 6 – 10 radial spines up to 5 mm long, bristly, flat against body, whitish, irregularly twisted**. Flowers 50 – 60 mm diameter and 40 – 45 mm long, around 16 inner petals, 7 – 10 mm wide, 20 – 30 mm long, purplish with a magenta central stripe, the tips and extreme edges serrated, outer petals scale-like, reddish with pale edges, 7 – 18 mm long and ca. 3 mm wide. Pericarp ca. 5mm long, more or less purplish with a whitish base, ovary up to 3mm diameter. Style up to 10mm long, with 6 white stigmas, 3mm long. Fruit up to 10 mm diameter, hairy, paler at the base, splitting longitudinally in 1 -2 cracks. Seed 0.8 mm diameter, brown, warty, hilum (seed attachment point) below surface.

Habitat & distribution: Abrapampa near Agi, Jujuy Province, northern Argentina; in rocky places, ca. 3,200m above sea level.

*Note 1- although the description and notes describe flowers that are “violacifloris” the photograph accompanying the description shows a plant with orangish-red flowers, albeit with outer petals tinged with purplish.

**Note 2- although central spines are not mentioned in the Latin description, they are mentioned in a paragraph in Czech and English printed below the description, giving this as a main distinguishing feature from A. atrovirens.
